Good afternoon!
I hope everyone is staying healthy during these strange times. We are at midterm of the first quarter already and things are flying by. This is the midpoint of the football season, with the Grizzlies playing their fourth game on Friday night. Volleyball is rolling and the Cross Country team is running strong right now! Homecoming is upon us in 2 weeks. The student council is hard at work planning a great week of activities and school spirit. More information to come on that! Speaking of school spirit, I want to take this opportunity to remind our students and parents the importance of staying involved. I've often said no one has ever said they regretted being involved in an activity, but I have very often hear people coming back and saying they wished they had been involved in this activity or that, or that they wish they would have put a little more time and effort into the activities they are involved with. My dream for our students is to live their high school dreams with NO REGRETS! Get involved and stay involved! Support one another! It sure makes the memories we all cherish.

We are off and running in 2019! We are in the stretch run for basketball with games almost everyday, and I would like to take this opportunity to write about sportsmanship. As we announce at the beginning of each game, “Good sportsmanship is essential to the success of our programs”. We announce that because we believe it to be true. What makes good sportsmanship? I believe it can be summed up in one word: Respect. This applies to players, coaches, parents, and fans. We all want to see our teams and children succeed, and we, especially myself, have to remind ourselves about good sportsmanship. These are some of the ways in which good sportsmanship and respect are shown.
Howdy!!
We are underway! We had a great first week of school, and are into week 2. Thanks to our amazing student body and staff for a pretty good week. As we get rolling with classes and learning, we get rolling with our activities as well. Please support the Grizzlies and Mustangs as they get going this month. Homecoming will be on us early, running from September 3rd to September 7th, culminating with the football game vs. the Tri State Tigers. Coronation will be Monday, Sept. 3 at 8:00 in the gym. The theme for the week is bands. Dress up days will be: Tuesday - Throwback Day Wednesday - Video Game Character Day Thursday - Class Color Day Friday - Band Day Jumping around on subjects, I would like to talk about student success. There are a number of different thoughts on what makes a student successful. I am a big believer in giving students a great school experience. To accomplish that, students need to take advantage of all of the opportunities presented to them. I encourage students to participate in as many activities as they can. I like to tell people "I've never heard someone wish they hadn't been involved, but I hear all the time people say they wish they would have tried more activities." Check this out to see what teachers mean to kids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjwjZe8u0-E Good morning from the Summit School!
Merry Christmas! Tis' the season to be thinking of others. As the weather turns colder and snowier, please make sure your students are dressed appropriately for the conditions. A hat, gloves, warm jacket, and snowpants are appropriate for recess. Students who ride buses should make sure they have a hat and gloves along.
Basketball games start this Friday with a home double header with Waverly South Shore! Most games will start at 6:15, if the time is different it will be announced. Come out and support the Wolves! A couple of dates to think about: December 18 - Free Community Meal put on by the Wilmot School Staff. Soup, sandwiches and bars will be served. All are welcome! December 21 - K-12 Christmas Concert in the gym at 7:00 December 22 - School is dismissed for Christmas break at 2:00 Again, if you have any questions, please contact me at 605-938-4647. Happy Holidays! Happy Halloween! The first quarter ended last week, and we are starting to need hats and gloves. A couple of reminders: We have had a couple of cases of head lice; please remind your child not to share hats, coats, or other personal items. Also, with hunting season in full swing, please make sure to remove and hunting gear from vehicles before coming to school. State law says a gun on the premises is punishable by a 12 month suspension from school.
Football and volleyball have wrapped up and we will start to think about basketball. We will have our parent meeting on Thursday, November 16 at 7:00 in the Study Hall. Practices begin on November 27th, so if your student is going out for basketball and hasn’t been out for a fall sport he or she will need a physical. Seventh graders and sophomores need to see the doctor. Stop in for a form. We did a presentation on Social Media during parent teacher conferences on some of the new things that our out there that our students may be using. The world is changing daily and the more informed we are the better prepared we are to make decisions. If you would like to see the presentation please contact me. As always, if you have questions about opportunities or the school itself, please don't hesitate to call me at 605-938-4647. Thank you for all of your support of the school. May always seems to fly by! Here we are with a week left of the school year. Every year seems to go a little bit faster. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all students, teachers, parents, and community members for their continued support of our school and the activities we do. Wilmot has people who genuinely care about their school, and for that we are very grateful.
This summer will be busy as well, with opportunities for athletic and academic improvement. We have several students taking advantage of dual credit opportunities this summer, as well as students who will take part in athletic camps and weight lifting programs. These programs are vital to the development of our programs and future success. As always, if you have questions about opportunities or the school itself, please don't hesitate to call me at 605-938-4647 We are closing in on April. It is hard to believe how fast the year goes. As I get older, it seems things move faster and faster!
April is a busy month. We have a lot of activities going on in April. The first track meet is April 4th. We have 6 students who qualified for the State History Fair in Brookings, so they will compete there on April 5th. There is also the ECC Math and Business Contest on April 5th. We are also in the midst of testing season. All 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 11th graders will be tested with the Smarter Balance test in Math and Language Arts. The Language Arts tests take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours (in 3 separate settings) and the Math tests will take approximately 2 hours of class time. The 5th, 8th and 11th graders will also be tested in Science with the Dakota Step test. This test will take 3 sessions of about 34-45 minutes. It is very important that students do the best they can on these tests. Please have them come to school well rested and have them eat a healthy breakfast! Again, if you have any questions, please contact me at 605-938-4647, leave a comment, fill out the form on this website, or email me at [email protected]. Thanks! Welcome to March, in like a lamb in Northeast South Dakota. You cannot beat a sunny, 60 degree day the first weekend of March! It is nice to go outside without a hat or coat and play some wiffle ball or shoot some hoops in the driveway.
As we hit March, we are heading into testing time. All of our students in grades 3 - 8 and our juniors will be taking the Smarter Balance tests. These tests will measure our students achievement in the areas of reading and math. The fifth, eighth, and eleventh graders will also be taking the Dakota Step Science Test. The testing window opens on March 8th and closes on May 5th. Students will be tested during this time. It is important that students show up well rested and do their best on these tests. It is scholarship season as well. Seniors, check out my scholarship page here. New opportunities will be posted as they come available. A big one due in a few weeks for students attending one of South Dakota's Tech Schools is the Build Dakota Scholarship. Track season starts shortly. If you are going out for track and haven't been out for a sport this year yet, you need to have a physical. Stop in and see me for a form if needed. I'm excited for the NCAA tournament coming up. Who do you have in the Final Four? Leave a comment with your teams below. The Wilmot 7th graders chose Duke, Kansas, North Carolina and Arizona! Have a great week! |
